Active Rest Produces Good Fruit.
A house without a foundation is easy, but not lasting. Build a foundation that lasts. When you build on Jesus, you need to dig deep. Dig deep into Scripture, prayer, Christian community, compassion and mercy today.
Our rest renews and transforms us. A good nights sleep will take care of many aches and pains; both in our bodies and in our hearts and minds. Jesus continues to teach the crowds and disciples in verses 43-49. Jesus teaches about active rest: what we are at the core of our being will come out in our attitude, our speech, our actions and our relationships. Jesus uses practical illustrations. Only a healthy apple tree offers a harvest of good (sweet) apples. Only the good heart of a person can bring the good things of God. Only the persons who build their lives of faith on Jesus, the rock, will stand the storms of daily living.
Active rest embraces spiritual disciplines of a strong devotional life, prayer, helping others, worship and Christian fellowship. Spiritual disciplines allow us to build our lives on the foundation of Jesus and bear good fruit.
Questions to ponder:
-What do healthy apple trees look like? Describe a good apple. Why do we associate a healthy tree with a healthy apple?
-How does one store up “things” in their lives? Name valuable possessions that you have. Name other things that are valuable but that can not be found on Wal-Mart's shelves. (Love from a child, an act of kindness from a stranger..)
-Describe your spiritual foundation. How have you built it or torn it down? How does forgiveness fit into the foundation of Jesus?
