God loves beyond limits!
Advent Rest: spend less; give more presence; love all; worship fully! The Christmas story is about love, hope, redemption, and relationship. But we easily allow this season to be about stuff, stress, and debt. Have we traded the best story in the world - the birth of our Lord and Savior - for a story about what is on sale? Let's remember that we find REST as we keep our focus on Christ!
The words "love all” are easy to say. As Christians, we use them frequently. We give time to help with yard work and take people to the doctor. Our money goes to far off lands to help with church planting, water projects or better education for children. We support mission and service workers in our neighborhood and around the world. So when we read Jesus's words in Mathew 25, we consider that - at least - we've taken some steps in the direction of “love all”.
Then we see Jesus in the stable and look forward to the cross. We realize God’s love is selfless, costly, and limitless in Christ’s death. Suddenly, we become aware of many limits that we place on "love all." I’ll love you... just don’t ask to stay in my house. I’ll love you... just don’t ask me to adopt your child. I’ll love you... just make sure it’s between 8 and 5 Monday through Friday. I’ll love you... but if you can’t speak my language, go to someone else. Am I willing to love with my presence even if it stretches my comfort zone? God's love is limitless! Can I love with God's love?
Questions to ponder:
- Identify the limits to your love. Consider time, money, personal space, personal time, stereo types...
- How do we” love all” in other seasons of the year?
